Leaders Talk #3 "The Cute 'Imposition' "
"Greater than fear is the trust that leaders place in their employees; it's the motivation that helps each employee step out of their comfort zone and overcome themselves."
From the very first days of joining FPT, I was fortunate to be guided by Mr. Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of FPT. I still vividly remember the feeling of bewilderment, even overwhelm, when he assigned tasks that seemed "impossible" to a young graduate like me. The fear was real, but greater than that fear was the trust he placed in me. That trust became the motivation that helped me boldly step out of my comfort zone, face challenges, and overcome myself. The feeling of being trusted, empowered, and "pushed into the water" by my boss, while always having their support, was truly special. It not only helped me grow professionally but also strengthened my resilience and confidence. The greatest lesson I learned from Mr. Binh was how to think and perceive problems through his sharp questions. To this day, I still cherish and appreciate those lessons and valuable experiences.
"Imposition" might seem contrary to the democratic and free spirit that FPT always strives for. However, any organization needs mechanisms to instill and nurture desired cultural values, and FPT is no exception.
During my time at FPT, I realized that corporate culture plays a crucial role in the perception, behavior, and emotions of each individual as well as the entire collective. I began to view corporate culture from a new perspective, the perspective of positive "imposition." "Imposition" might seem contrary to the democratic and free spirit that FPT always strives for. However, any organization needs mechanisms to instill and nurture desired cultural values, and FPT is no exception. "Imposition" here does not mean rigid or oppressive but is implemented subtly and skillfully through various tools and mechanisms, notably "leading by example" and "training" such as the Master-Disciple model I experienced. FPT is fortunate to have all these mechanisms, from the care and inquiries of leaders to measurement, control, empowerment, and conflict resolution. I believe FPT's greatest success lies in the Mini MBA model and the Master-Disciple model, initiatives highly regarded when I shared them with other businesses.
Sharing culture is not just a job but a mission, a passion. It's a journey of continuous discovery, learning, and growth, a journey I always cherish and am proud of.
My 23-year journey with FPT, especially the 12 years as Head of Department and Director of Group Communications, has given me the opportunity to live and breathe the unique culture of this place. Not only was I immersed in it, but I also had the chance to recognize, systematize, and share the core values that make FPT unique. And I realized that sharing FPT's culture is not just a job but a mission, a passion.
The feeling of being inspired and witnessing the sparkling eyes and enthusiasm of colleagues when they better understand our "common home" is truly a wonderful source of energy, a spiritual "dopamine" like no other. Each story and experience shared not only spreads FPT's core values but also provides an opportunity for me to accumulate more knowledge, deepen my thinking, and love the corporate culture that I am a part of even more. It's a journey of continuous discovery, learning, and growth, a journey I always cherish and am proud of.
